For those of you that regularly read this blog, you’ll know that the Smallest Smallholding has been home to some lovely ex-battery hens. I’ve watched my girls flourish and live wonderful, free lives, whilst keeping us nicely supplied with tasty fresh eggs.
If you think you would like to take on some ex-batts, then North London Hen Rescue are currently looking for homes for 1,000 hens from a massive 3,000 hen rescue. These girls HAVE to find homes, and the rescue is due to take place in the latter half of September on a weekend. I’ll post when I know the exact date. But if you think you can give them the retirement they deserve, then contact Carly at North London Hen Rescue via the Adoption form.
There are co-ordination ‘pick up’ points all over the UK, so it’s not just restricted to London and the M25.
I can safely say that having hens has, overall, been such a rewarding experience. If you’ve been thinking about it, I would say take the plunge and go for it. I’ve put up a picture of Cynthia so you can see just how much they come on when given a bit of TLC and a chance to live the life they should have always had. Please help if you can!
Unfortunately this rescue has ‘fallen through’ at the last minute. So sorry to those that might have signed up – hopefully the rescue in October will go ahead so keep your fingers crossed.

It’s amazing what technology could do to help us in terms of getting word around.
I’m glad that there are people like you who value the whole ecological web and protect hens and give them, as you said: “The life that they should have.”
We have thought very seriously about getting hens, we use to have them in New Zealand but am not sure on the laws of UK. We have a large garden, but is just a back garden. Once again, your pictures are wonderful. fiona
P.S hope you don’t mind, would like to add your blog to mine, many thanks fiona
I have a 8 acres of land and a pets corner for my holiday guest would like to take some ex batts where is the nearest place to Conwy North Wales??
Hello,
I am able to give 4 ex-batt girls a home. I have a medium back garden with a Wendy House (kids no longer use it), my daughter and I would love to be part of this giving rescue hens a decent home. I shall start knitting jumpers for them now.
Let me know about the delivery dates.
Kind regards
Charmaine
Hi there, I’d love to have two ex-bats from you. at the moment I have one very lonely girl named “Gemima” from Devon so I would like her to have some other mates. Please keep me posted when and where, I am from south London.

Hi, We can house between 10 to 15 hens, we have rescued 20 hens last year and have lost 5 but they have had a good year of freedom, they grew all their feathers back and had their own identity, giving us hours of fun watching them run free pulling worms from the ground, plus great eggs, would recommend battery hens to everyone they are a pleasure.
Hi,
We are busy building a coup at the mo and will be ready to take liccle hens by October. It’ll be big enough for four and a friend is knitting some winter outfits for the new arrivals. Let me know when and where we are needed, I am also in South London.
Cheers
Rachel
I am a fosterer for the RSPCA and have been rehoming battery hens for about 5 years, I have been driving miles to collect them, Sussex and Newbury! The M25 sounds much easier. I have a list of people interested, homes waiting for 50 hens. Most people have had hens in the past or have homed other anilmals from me. Any news on dates of next batch would be great, Sue
I had no idea you were there either! Drove to Pinner to get my 4 ex-batt girls. Would love to hear more. 4 girls collected in August still going strong (touch wood), but would be able to home one or two more. Please let me know when you next have a delivery.
Please can someone help, I live on a MOD base and a good friend of mine has recently gone to afganistan. He asked me to look after his hens, but they cockadodle lots.
We have had lots of complaints from the neighbors and after managing to get hold of him he is happy for me to find them a new hone!
They are so beautiful.
Please can someone help.
Mandy

Hi,
I rescused some ex batts 5 years ago and absolutely loved them. Sadly they have now all died, having had a lovely retirement and I am moving house. I’ll be unable to keep hens for the foreseeable so am offering up my coop, run and chicken wire and posts for free for anyone who can collect from Harrow, Middlesex by this coming Monday! I can send pictures should you like! Email me if interested!
Hi
I am a vet in north london who has rescued two chickens and am looking for a home for them. Please email me triciamundy@gmail.com
Hi I noticed your message about rehoming 2 chickens – please email me if you still need help. I may not be able to house the birds in the long term but and caring for 3 ex batts and could give shelter if you ever come across a small amount of birds that need a foster home. Hackney city farm or the Dalston Farm shop have coops which might also be able to help out
