Just a quick update – you may remember that I posted a short while ago about Little Hen Rescue and their bid to rehome 10,000 battery hens. Well, the good news is that they SUCCEEDED!!! An amazing feat – all the girls are OUT, free, and in loving, new homes with a good retirement ahead of them.
I just wanted to say a massive well done to all those involved in coordinating and rescuing the girls, and of course to those that have given them new homes. It’s a fantastic bit of news.
Of course, there are still many, many battery hens that are awaiting homes (in an ideal world, there would be no battery hens at all though). There are a number of organisations working with the farmers to have the girls rehomed, and if you’re still looking to adopt hens, why not take a look at:
Battery Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT)
All have coordinators dotted throughout the country, so the chances are that wherever you live, you won’t have to travel too far to collect your girls.
Once again, big well done and congratulations to Little Hen Rescue.
That’s wonderful news 🙂
Wow! That’s just briliant!
Good news !
We got our three ex-battery hens about eight weeks ago, and they have been a pleasure to care for. From the start they fitted in well with the five younger pullets we already had with minimal pecking (mind you the ex-bats are definitely in charge !). They are also laying about five eggs each, a week, so they are not past it as far as we are concerned.
Adopt an ex-bat !
Fab isn’t it! I’m Coordinator for Lincs and Jo never thought she’d manage it. I gave her a kick up the bum and said “WE WILL GET THEM ALL” and I am so proud of her for all her hard work in saving these girls.
She never stops.
My Hubby went to help her out this past weekend and I told her to go and have a weekend off but she couldn’t tear herself away, she is so dedicated.
Well done!
Great news – I know how hard it is to find homes for that many chickens, especially as a lot of people only have room for a few.
There is such a lot of organisation involved – and I don’t envy anyone doing that job!
😀
Wow….very cool. We’ll check back for more news on the Bat Hen issue.
