Egg Flash! Pattie Lays Again

Pattie’s Milk Moustache

It’s been a good month or so since Pattie last laid an egg.

But it seems that she’s getting over her mystery illness. This morning I got up, let them out and hung around when I noticed she’d gone back in the nest box.

About 25 minutes later she re-emerged, looking rather pleased with herself. “BBBRRrrGAAAHHHH!” she said. So I peeped in the nestbox, and there is was, the egg that has almost laid to rest weeks of worry.

I say ‘almost’ because I can’t help but be cautiously optimistic. I’m hoping that this is the beginning of a quiet period, as far as chicken health at the Smallest Smallholding goes.

Yeyyy but we can’t eat her eggs at the moment…the baytril antibiotics have to work their way out of her system before we can start using them again…should be ok in a couple of weeks though!

She laid again this morning, so things definitely seem back on track.

I would see the return of eggs as a sign of good health. - Glad that there is some good news.

You must be so pleased Pattie is feeling better. I should think the lovely warm sunshine makes her feel happy too!

love your website it has inspired me to start my own sustainable farm. i was wondering what time you lock the chickens up at night and let them out in the morning . keep it up

ah thank you all for your comments!

todd the time we let the hens out in the morning depends on the sunrise - basically they come out quite early in summer. At the moment they’re up around 6:30am, by high summer it’ll be around 5:00am!!!! But Rich is thinking about designing a special automatic door opener so we don’t have to keep taking it turns to get up at stupid o’clock :)

Bed times are the same - depends when the sun goes down. The nice thing is they put themselves to bed, we just have to pull the ladder up for them. At the moment they’re going to bed around 7:45pm - in high summer it’ll be around 9-9:30pm and in the deep dark depths of winter it’s around 4:30pm!

So lovely to know I’ve inspired you x
